St. Mary's Haiti Ministry
St. Mary’s is twinned with
Our Lady of Lourdes parish in Belladere, Haiti. Belladere is
located 40 miles northeast of Port-Au Prince. Fr. (Per) Gernelus
Clerzine is the Pastor. At the heart of the Diocese of
Richmond's Haiti Outreach lies its twinning program. Over 60
parishes in the Diocese of Richmond are twinned with a parish or
organization in Haiti. The twinning program is based on
relationship and solidarity; it is understood that each partner
has gifts to share with the other and that we stand with each
other as we journey forward in faith. Twinning is an active,
mutual, on-going joy filled commitment between two faith
communities. Twinning involves developing a friendship as well
as a working relationship. The hop is that the relationship
would not become exclusive, but a stepping stone to solidarity
and greater exchange in the worldwide mission of Jesus.

first task in approaching another people, another culture is to
take off our shoes, for the place is holy. Else we find ourselves
treading on people’s dreams. More serious still we may forget
that God was there before our arrival.
Haiti Students Sponsorship Program: As of (01/04/16) of
the 2015 Program, we have 54 sponsors for 100 children out of 200
at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School in Dosele. We would like to thank
all of those that are participating in the program. Still for only
$100 (.27 cents a day) for a whole year you can cover tuition,
teacher’s salaries, books, some supplies, and other related
expenses to keep the schools operating. The program year runs from
March 1 to March 1 – with suggested payment dates of March 1, June
1, October 1, and February 1 – or the total $100 at any time.
Payments should be made out to St. Mary’s and marked as “Haitian
Student Sponsorship”; placed in an envelope; and dropped in the
weekend collection or mailed to St. Mary’s Church Office at 202
South Broad St. Suffolk VA 23434.

Gift of Water (GOW) (http://www.giftowater.org): Gift of Water® is
a non-profit organization dedicated to providing filtered and
clean drinking water to the third world communities that it
serves. The GOW is a well-established water purification program
that has been working for over 15 years, primarily in Haiti. Their
experts have years of combined experience in water filtration and
our purification system has been recognized by the Center for
Disease Control (CDC). We have been asked by another twinning
parish, St. Joseph in Rochester, Indiana to take over this program
in Belladere which will also include Mt Carmel School in Dosele.
There are currently no wells in Belladere and all attempts to dig
for water have failed. The cost of this program is about $100 per
month for a technician who places/repair the units. The Haiti
committee is soliciting input and potential support for this
program before we make a commitment. Please contact Paul Fletcher
(757) 255-4794 or Fletchpe@aol.com for further information.
Interested in the Haiti Ministry: The Haiti Committee meets the

What We Do
Currently, St. Mary’s Haiti Ministry
sponsors two schools run by Our Lady of Lourdes—Our Lady of Mt.
Carmel at Dosele and St. Joseph’s at Los Abeilles. This year,
there are over 400 students , grades K-6, attending the
schools. Through our Sponsorship Program Fund we are able to pay
the salaries of the 7 teachers and 1 principal, pay for school
books and other materials, pay for cooks’ salaries and spices
(beans and rice provided by Mary’s Meals ) , and other
miscellaneous school and parish needs. Recently, a Building Fund
has been created to enable construction of a permanent primary
school building in Belladere. Backpacks for Haiti is another
program that has allowed us to provide school supplies and other
items to the students of our twin parish schools. With
permission of the Suffolk, Franklin, and Southhampton Public
School districts, we are able to collect used backpacks and
school supplies at the end of the school year. In 2009, 24
schools participated and we filled 40 boxes with 264 backpacks
and other supplies! Items are sent in a container shipment
through the Patricia Sullivan Haitian Outreach Foundation.
