Sponsorship Program

St. Mary’s is twinned with Our Lady of Lourdes parish in Belladere, Haiti. Belladere is located 40 miles northeast of Port-Au Prince. Fr. (Per) Gernelus Clerzine is the Pastor. At the heart of the Diocese of Richmond's Haiti Outreach lies its twinning program. Over 60 parishes in the Diocese of Richmond are twinned with a parish or organization in Haiti. The twinning program is based on relationship and solidarity; it is understood that each partner has gifts to share with the other and that we stand with each other as we journey forward in faith. Twinning is an active, mutual, on-going joy filled commitment between two faith communities. Twinning involves developing a friendship as well as a working relationship. The hop is that the relationship would not become exclusive, but a stepping stone to solidarity and greater exchange in the worldwide mission of Jesus.

Our first task in approaching another people, another culture is to take off our shoes, for the place is holy.  Else we find ourselves treading on people’s dreams.  More serious still we may forget that God was there before our arrival.

Haiti Students Sponsorship Program:  As of (08/15/13) of the 2013 Program, we have 55 sponsors for 86 children out of 200 at Dosele.  Holy Angles is now sponsoring the 199 children at Los Abeilles which comes under the town of Roysec.  If you have not participated in this program please do.  There is no middle man your donation goes to operation of the school and paying the teachers.  Its’ only .27 cents a day which equals $100.00 a year to support a child to attend school.

Haiti Backpack Program:   We had 15 schools that participated in this year’s program.  We collected 20 boxes of school supplies and various items.  This is less than half of what we sent last year.  The program is still open for donation.  We could use small dry eraser boards, French children books, and additional regular school supplies.   We don’t have a shipping date for Sea Container.  We would like to thank everyone that participated in the sorting, packing, and moving the boxes to storage.  A special thanks to the Graf family.

Travel to Haiti:  St. Mary’s Haiti Trip – A trip to Haiti is schedule for February 2014.  We are waiting for feedback from Fr. Gernelus as to the dates.   As of this date Fr. Ken and Paul Fletcher will be making the trip.  There is a lot of planning that goes into the trip.  If you are interested in going or thinking about it please contact:  Paul Fletcher at fletchpe@aol.com or (757) 255-4794.   There is still time to Change Your Life

UPDATE:   Construction of the 5 classroom building has been completed.  It needs a little TLC.  We are trying to find laminated  maps of the World, Virginia, Suffolk, and Haiti for the school.  Fr. Gernelus has asked if it is possible to support the construction of 3 additional classrooms for DoseleMost of the streets in Belladere have been paved.  Outside of Port –au-Prince there are about 400 homes constructed that have power/water and a new school for the people in the tents.  On the 21st of July I gave a Haiti Presentation to members of Shiloh Baptist Church in Reedville, VA which was well received.  There was interest in traveling to Haiti.

2013 Eastern Regional Haiti Gathering which will be held at St. Gregory The Great Church on Virginia Beach Blvd October 19, 2013 @ 9:30 am:    COME FOR FELLOWSHIP, NETWORKING, PRAYER, BREAKOUT SESSIONS ON TOPICS SELECTED BY PARTICIPANTS, NEWS FROM THE HAITI MINISTRIES COMMISSION, LUNCH, AND MORE! What We Do

Currently, St. Mary’s Haiti Ministry sponsors two schools run by Our Lady of Lourdes—Our Lady of Mt. Carmel at Dosele and St. Joseph’s at Los Abeilles. This year, there are over 400 students , grades K-6, attending the schools. Through our Sponsorship Program Fund we are able to pay the salaries of the 7 teachers and 1 principal, pay for school  books and other materials, pay for cooks’ salaries  and spices (beans and rice provided by Mary’s Meals ) , and other miscellaneous school and parish needs. Recently, a Building Fund has been created to enable construction of a permanent primary school building in Belladere.  Backpacks for Haiti is another program that has allowed us to provide school supplies and other items to the students of our twin parish schools.  With permission of the Suffolk, Franklin, and Southhampton Public School districts, we are able to collect used backpacks and school supplies at the end of the school year.  In 2009, 24 schools participated and we filled 40 boxes with 264 backpacks and other supplies!  Items are sent in a container shipment through the Patricia Sullivan Haitian Outreach Foundation.
